Course Outline

Day 1: Cloud Foundations and Core Services

Part I: Cloud Architecture Foundations

  1. Cloud architecture principles and non-functional requirements (availability, scalability, security, performance).
  2. Cloud adoption models and associated trade-offs: IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, and shared responsibility models.
  3. Azure architectural components: Regions, Resource Groups, and Resources.
  4. Mission-critical architecture and disaster recovery targets (RTO, RPO).

Part II: Core Cloud Services

  1. Storage and data foundations: Azure Table Storage and Azure Cosmos DB.
  2. Compute and container platforms: Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) and Azure Container Registry (ACR).
  3. Relational data and messaging: Azure SQL Database and Azure Service Bus.
  4. Hands-on practice for each service: configuration, deployment, and evaluation against availability, performance, security, and pricing criteria.
  5. Infrastructure as Code using Bicep for creating reproducible environments.

Day 2: Architecture Leadership and Clean Architecture

Part III: The Architect

  1. Definitions of software architecture and various architectural viewpoints.
  2. Roles, responsibilities, and decision ownership for software architects.
  3. Specifying and communicating architecture to both technical and business stakeholders.
  4. A practical pathway to becoming an effective software architect.

Part IV: Managing Dependencies in Monoliths

  1. Clean Architecture principles: separation of concerns, dependency direction, and maintainability.
  2. Selecting the appropriate cloud services for monolithic modernisation (analysing pros and cons).
  3. Hands-on lab: build and deploy a Clean Architecture solution in Azure using .NET.

Day 3: Domain Driven and Distributed Architectures

Part V: DDD, CQRS, and Event Sourcing

  1. Domain-Driven Design fundamentals: domain boundaries, ubiquitous language, and model-driven design.
  2. CQRS and Event Sourcing concepts for managing complex, evolving business domains.
  3. Architectural patterns used in DDD-based cloud solutions.
  4. Hands-on lab: apply Event Sourcing as a requirements-driven design technique (mapping requirements to events, aggregates, and event flows).

Part VI: Microservices

  1. Microservices architecture principles and trade-offs in distributed systems.
  2. Selecting cloud services for microservices-based solutions (analysing pros and cons).
  3. Synchronous and asynchronous communication styles in microservices, including reliability patterns such as circuit breakers and resiliency strategies.
  4. Testability in microservices and CI/CD: contract testing, integration testing boundaries, automated quality gates, and deployment confidence.
  5. Hands-on lab: build and deploy microservices in Azure using .NET.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in an advanced programming language (either C# or Java)
  • Basic understanding of the architectural styles covered in the course
  • Foundational experience with cloud computing services
  • A minimum of five years of software engineering experience
